What If?

For years I’ve wanted to photograph this one abandoned old house on Ohio State Route 2 somewhat east of Toledo, Ohio.

The road is filled with traffic and I was always in a hurry to get to a nearby park or parts nearby. Couldn’t stop. Too much in a hurry. Not safe. Never noticed the driveway. Scared of getting clobbered by a semi. Maybe I’ll get it on the way back, but then I never did.

And then one day I did.

It’s important to say “what if” in your photography. It’s not just about the big picture, like “What if I ask so-and-so if I could take their picture,” or “What if I could go to an exotic place and take pictures,” but it’s important on a smaller level as well. “What if” can include taking a wider shot or moving in closer, or removing some debris from the shot, trying it as a vertical, getting down on your belly or triggering the camera while it’s on a monopod high over your head. Most of all, what if you just try something you’ve been meaning to try? It’s a really great feeling when you do.

Now, then… what if I could go inside?

Very nice. It makes you wonder what happened to the people. Did they move or die? How long has the house been abandoned? I have often come across similar scenes along the highways in this area but I have also been concerned about being run down by semi’s or other traffic. Many of these houses are located along busy highways but I bet when they were built and was probably only a 2 Lane Dirt Rd. Thanks for this rather poignant shot. And as far as going inside, well, I don’t know if I would do that. You could easily fall to the floor if there is still a floor and who knows what interesting critters might await you.

Well, yeah, I know…there also just might be a person or people living in this type of place and I’m not sure they’d want me walking around inside their shelter while they’re napping!

I think it’s great that you added this to your agenda! You generally shoot nature… for some reason, maybe the setting, it feels like a nature shot! Hmmmmm.

You were brave to go in the other run down place… maybe you should. If so, proceed with caution. You think someone is living here? I bet it was a beautiful farmhouse!

Gary, I definitely would have gone inside. Mostly because I’m a little bit crazy.
