I travel all over the world in order to take wildlife pictures and research food.
To qualify that: I mean I travel all over MY world, which exists both here and within 150 miles of here, but the fact remains the same.
One of the food items I am particularly interested in researching happens to be a great American classic. It’s a simple dish which requires little prep, very little cleanup, virtually no skill, and yet it pleases all audiences both young and old every single time.
Restaurants on this planet invariably get it wrong and should remove this beauty from their menus out of self-respect. They apparently want to make the dish their own so they grind, dice, shred, or otherwise ruin the simplicity of the ingredients.
One popular chain restaurant even adds cheese to the recipe. While I’m a big fan of cheeses in many varieties, I would never put cheese on my Cheerios, cheese on my chocolate pudding, nor cheese on my great American classic.
This classic, as you have guessed by now, is the BLT. For you kids under 3 that somehow don’t know this one but are able to read this anyway, it’s a bacon, lettuce, and tomato sandwich, and this is now the season to eat them.
Sure! Twist it if you like, that’s entirely up to you. Add cheese, or a fried egg, or sprinkle with basil. You might even add sardines, pepper, and why not garlic? Heck! Put a pork chop on it and add spaghetti sauce with maraschino cherries for all I care, but if you really want a treat, stick with the basics.
Bacon, lettuce, and tomato, with the mayonnaise of your choice on regular ol’ bread.
THAT’S what I’m talking about. For more info and confirmation, check the Wikipedia Entry about this wonderful thing to eat.
Have a great Summer and have a great sandwich.
All photos ©me, earlier today, and then I ate it. Yum! Canon 60D and EF 85mm lens; ProMaster extension tubes used for the close-ups, also yum!
